Spring Clean...Your Windows for just pennies

Last week, I noticed a rather disturbing sight...the dining room windows. It was time to stop avoiding them, they were filthy and covered with my kids' finger prints.

My window solution costs pennies and does a great job. No streaks, just crystal clear, clean windows. A friend who owns a window cleaning business gave me this tip several years ago. Instead of industrial-strength cleaners, he uses original(blue) Dawn dish washing liquid to clean his windows.

Fill a spray bottle with water and add about 2 drops of original Dawn dish washing liquid. You don't need much Dawn; too much will make the windows soapy. Shake well right before spraying on the glass. I use old infant t-shirts instead of paper towels, and my windows go from grimy to crystal clear. This works well on mirrors too.

  1. Vinegar and water also work great for cleaning glass.

  2. Dawn is also great for bathing young kittens, if they have fleas -- it's a mild, food-grade soap, and therefore doesn't have harsh or damaging chemicals. Now I see, in your post, that it is useful for windows as well! Thanks for the tip.

  3. I have always used alcohol and water, but the smell is so strong. I have a few bottles of the blue Dawn that I use for laundry, I am going to try this. Thanks for the tip.

  4. @Miss T - Vinegar is an awesome cleanser. I use it for my floors and sinks.

@Paula - I didn't know you could bath kittens with Dawn - great tip.

@Carrie - I'm curious how you use Dawn in your laundry. Would love for you to elaborate.

  5. I *love* doing this with dish soap. I also use it on mirrors and my granite counter tops and my black gas stove because it doesn't leave any streaks (it works especially well on the stove because it has a degreaser in it). And I always have dish soap, so I'm never left without what I need to clean windows, etc. :)

  6. I am cleaning clueless. Do I spray with the Dawn solution first, wipe, then follow with water or a water-vinegar solution?

  8. Miko's Girl - You don't need to follow up with an additional spray. Just spray the dawn solution and wipe clean. The key is not to put too much Dawn into your water bottle. Just a couple of drops will do. Hope this helps. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  9. Neat. I just cleaned my windows with water and clean rags and they look great. I actually switched to using a Norwex window rag and water on my mirrors over a year ago and love it! I like your tip too.

  10. I have never used Dawn for cleaning windows! This is a great tip. I use the vinegar and water solution, but my husband hates the smell. There wouldn't be a problem with your solution. Thanks.
