From Bravo to Books

It has been 2.5 months since we canceled cable TV and the transition has gone quite smoothly. In fact, I'm watching less TV altogether and I'm reading more.

The girl who knew all of the names of every Real Housewife of the OC, New York City, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Beverly Hills, now can't be bothered by such toxic mean girl reality drama and is currently engrossed in the best seller, Gone Girl.

The girl who only read one novel a year while on her summer vacation is in the middle of her third novel since March 1.

The girl who used to leave a 24 hour news channel on all day when working from home is now content with my nightly shot of the news at 6:30 pm on a network channel. And she tends to get more work done during the day!

The only time in these two and half months that I wished we had cable was on the Friday after the Boston Marathon bombing. I used the internet and I survived.

As a family, we did miss a full season of Duck Dynasty, but we were able to watch a full episode online after a show aired. After a few days, the episode is then locked and you have to enter your cable provider. Oh well.

I still watch a little TV, but mostly I've been reading at night and I'm here to tell you that life without cable is just fine.

Have you given up cable TV? How are you handling it? Let us know in the comments.

    1. You are so right--everything in moderation. I realized though that I really don't miss tv.

  2. We couldn't do without cable TV, for two main reasons: news and sports. Like you said, during the Boston bombings coverage I was glued to the TV and this week I'm following the IRS/Benghazi/AP scandals pretty closely. Add to that that we enjoy following sports and I know we wouldn't want to do without.

I'm glad it's working out for you, though. What are you reading?

    1. Julie - We're surviving now, but when football season starts back up my husband may go crazy. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it! This whole IRS/Benhazi scandal is pretty riveting, but I'll just have to follow online.

Right now, I'm reading Gone Girl. It started out slow for me, but it's getting good now.

  3. I could totally give up cable. I don't watch tv and haven't for years. Well I should say, I never turn the tv on to watch it. I have been working in the same room with the tv on and I will see a show here and there. My family could never give it up. They don't watch that much but what they do watch they are totally addicted to. Soccer games and How I met Your Mother top the list.

    1. Michelle - I have young kids(7 & 5) and I was pleasantly surprised how much is available for them on Netflix...at a lot less cost.

  5. I ALWAYS tell people that they won't miss it - you really just fine other things to do - I'm pretty sure they don't ever believe me.

  6. We only have the basic channels, like the bare minimum with just local channels. We do have Netflix, but do not use it that often. I missed it at first, but in reality, Tv is really just a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, I will watch The Voice when it is on , and I look forward to the next Season of Downtown Abby, but the tv is no longer kept on just because. The kids play, inside and out, draw, color, read . . and I read about a book a week. Every night before bed I read. Just don't talk about the lack of sports channels with my husband.

    1. Carrie - I was really surprised when my husband agreed to cancel cable, because he is a huge football fan and we no longer have ESPN. oh well, I'm sure he'll survive come September...I hope!
