Growing Herbs in My Garden

I was able to plant my herbs in my square foot garden on Monday, before the rains came in. My veggies will have to wait another day.

I expanded my herbs this year. I have always planted parsley and rosemary, but this year I added a few more. Along with those two, I have dill, thyme, basil, oregano, pineapple sage, and lemon verbena. A few of them are labeled 'tender' perennial, so we'll see next year if they make it through the zone 6 winters.

I want to preserve some of the herbs for the fall and winter. I don't know much about drying and preserving herbs, so I'm going to need to do a little reading on the subject. I'll be sure to write about it.

I found the cute little ceramic herb markers at a yard sale. I have seen them in stores for several dollars a piece. I think I paid $2 for all 5 markers.

What herbs do you grow in your garden? How do you preserve them? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I normally do dill, basil, thyme, sage, parsley, chives, and oregano. I dried all of mine last year. I think I may freeze some this year as well.

  2. I have dill, basil, rosemary, oregano, chives, and parsley. I love to puree the basil with olive oil and sometimes also with parsley and freeze it in ice cube trays.

Dill seeds are easy to harvest. When they're dried on the plant, I cut off the heads and put them in paper bags to shake the seeds off and make the collection easier.

  3. We grow oregano, chives, parsley, thyme and mint in hanging baskets - I harvest year-around for cooking mostly (though the mint gets out of control pretty quickly!). We've got rosemary in the ground which I use mostly fresh as well. And a large container of basil (which never seems to be enough for me!)

I'm thinking of trying to preserve some of my herbs this year though. I'm considering freezing. We'll see how it goes!

  5. Super cute! I'm growing basil, oregano and rosemary (my pizza sauce herbs). I also have chives. My oregano overwintered last year (zone 5) and it was COLD!

  6. Chives. You all have convinced me that I need to plant chives. I forgot about chives.

Thanks everyone for reading and commenting.

  7. Nice Job. I want Cilantro this year but I can't seem to keep them alive!
